In March of 2008, I spent a week sleeping under a bridge, eating out of dumpsters and panhandling for change as I investigated the social injustice that homeless men and women in St. Augustine, Florida have to face on a daily basis. This is a picture taken by photographer Peter Willott of St. Augustine of me talking with Shamus, the man who took me into his camp and guided me around for the week. The article that I wrote shortly after this week was nominated by Flagler College’s communications department for a Society of Professional Journalists, featured on the front page of Florida’s SPJ website and published on the cover of St. Augustine’s newspaper, The Record.
